Pakistan's salaried class on the brink of death

Is Pakistan's salary class about to die at the hands of the IMF?

People are protesting on the roads while the government is helpless in the face of the IMF policies.

It has become impossible for salaried employees working in government and private offices to survive amid inflation. The government will have to take immediate steps. Either inflation should be reduced or salaries should be increased : Public Demand

Global Media Networked - Special Story

The current government is making amends for the irresponsibility of the previous governments in adopting a stable economic strategy that guarantees sustainable development, and the ruthlessness with which the ruling class continued to meet its lavish expenses by borrowing on loans.

The current government is trying to put the national economy on the path of sustainable development through strict economic reforms as per the instructions of the International Monetary Fund. In this regard, the government has secured a three-year Extended Fund Facility worth seven billion dollars from the IMF, which will be reviewed by a nine-member IMF mission that will arrive in Pakistan on March 3 for a fortnightly visit. The first phase of the review will focus on technical aspects and the second phase will focus on policy level negotiations. The preparation of the budget for the next fiscal year will be reviewed.

The IMF team will meet officials of several government agencies including the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Energy, Planning Commission, State Bank of Pakistan, Federal Board of Revenue, Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority. Separate discussions will also be held with representatives of the four provinces.

According to sources, the relief that the government is hoping to provide to the salaried class will be subject to the IMF's consent. However, it should not be difficult for the government's economic team to convince the IMF of the need to redress the decades-long injustice with the salaried class and by effectively arranging for collection from those classes who, despite their huge income, have no share in income tax, maximum facilities should be provided to the salaried class, which has been paying the share of others only because it is an easy target for the Finance Ministry.
